Revive me, oh Lord, according to Your word. *A Daddy Draft*

Source
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sit in the presence of The Lord? I've always felt distanced from God. It's as if my head is so clogged up with knowledge about God and who He is that none of it has made it to my heart. After years of theological and doctrinal studies I packaged God all up into a nice neat little box that explains everything that we know about Him from the Bible.

In November last year our pastor announced that an organization called Time to Revive was going to be coming to our area. I was super excited about the idea of revival. I've heard about revivals from the past and how God does amazing unexplainable things and brings thousands into the kingdom. I didn't really understand all the details of this new ministry, but I knew I was ALL IN!

January 12th, prayer week began. A whole week of praying morning, noon, and night every day. I was there every chance I could, and something very unexpected happened. God began moving in an amazing and unexplainable way throughout our community. Every prayer meeting I attended I could feel that I was entering into the presence of the Lord. Then it happened. The main speaker began talking about healing and prophesying. My theological alarms were sounding a red alert. However, I couldn't deny the fact that at every prayer meeting, I was personally meeting with God. He was there every time. I scrutinized every word and passage preached, and everything I was hearing was in line with scripture, it just didn't fit into my theological grid.

Revival is here in Indiana, and our prayer week has been extended to 52 days. I am deeply struggling with the theology being preached, and yet I love going and experiencing the presence of The Lord. I feel like Peter when he walked out on the water to meet with Jesus. He eagerly jumped out of the boat and began walking. But then he noticed how big the waves were and how fierce the storm raged and fear gripped him. He began drowning in the midst of it all. I jumped into this Revive Indiana from the start, but now it's as if the Holy Spirit is doing something so huge that I'm fighting to keep my head above water. I can't explain or understand all that God is doing. For the first time in my life my God is so big that I can't put him in a box. And you know what...it's wonderful.

Senseless

A Daddy Draft

Have you ever watched someone do something that you know is wrong and you simply wonder to yourself, "What were they thinking?" The Father who blows his whole paycheck at the bar on Friday night and gets waisted. The wife who racks up thousands of dollars of credit card debt just so she can wear clothes that are "in style." The straight "A" student who steals prescription drugs and overdoses on them. The husband who beats his wife. The woman who abandons her children. "What were they thinking?"

My story begins twenty years ago when a friend of mine introduced me to pornography. It began simply as my curiosity getting the best of me, and it morphed into an unbreakable chain that grew stronger and tighter as the years went by. I grew up in a Christian home, I have parents who love me dearly. I went to church regularly and actively participated in their events. I studied the Bible for myself, went to Bible college, and served in various ministries. I got married, i had three kids, and I worked in a Christian organization. And all the while I was dabbling in a secret sin that few knew about.  Cautiously finding time alone to serf the web and look at images and videos of people having sex and living promiscuous lives.

You're probably saying to yourself,"What was he thinking?"

My wife knew of my battle with purity. She had caught me a few times in the past. I always assured her that I would do better. I would seek counsel from my friends and pastors and I would try to live a pure life. But I always turned back to my sin. It was so rampant that my daily struggle that nearly always ended in failure would leave me thinking, "It is impossible to be pure, this is just who I am."

On September 22, 2012, my wife discovered that not only was I still failing at living a pure life, but I was about one step away from having an actual affair. She confronted me and told me that I had to change and find help because I was destroying our family. And she asked me, "What were you thinking?"

The truth is, I didn't know what I was thinking. I didn't understand how I could love my wife and kids, and yet still look for something else to satisfy me. I immediately sought counsel from my pastor and my father-in-law. One of my biggest frustrations was that I didn't feel like I was truly remorseful over my sin. I desperately wanted to break down and cry and weep over what I had done to my God and my family. But I couldn't. In fact, I couldn't even remember the last time that I had ever cried at all.

I began praying and asking God to grant me repentance. It was something that I felt only God could give me. "God  may perhaps grant them repentance  leading to a knowledge of the truth, (2 Timothy 2:25 ESV)" On October 15, 2012, my Pastor met with me and my wife to discuss my sin and how we could move forward as a couple and as a family. He told me that I needed to have a conversation with Lindsay and tell her everything about what sin I had been involved in and how I had been hiding it from her and I needed to ask her to forgive me. He warned me that it wasn't good enough for me to simply tell her 90% of what I had been involved in, but to be completely honest in every detail not hiding anything.

That night Lindsay and I sat in our living room and I shared with her the sin that had enslaved me for the past twenty years of my life. It was not a pleasant conversation; I was ashamed and humiliated, and Lindsay was furious that I would be involved in something so disgusting. Lindsay was so angry that she ended up turning to scripture and just started reading from the Word. I don't remember what she read, I simply remember how the Word of God pierced my heart like a two edged sword and I began to weep over the sin in my life. God had finally granted me the repentance that I had been longing for.

Since that night I have spent most mornings reading the Word of God and clinging to Him each day. He may have granted me repentance from my sin, but their was still a lot to do to mend the relationships that I had broken with my wife, family, and friends. I began reading through Proverbs and The Lord showed me something very interesting. Many times throughout Proverbs it contrasts the wise and the foolish. "On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found, but  a rod is for the back of him who  lacks sense. (Proverbs 10:13 ESV)" It is very clear in Proverbs that those who are wise have understanding and they obey God's Word. But the fool lacks sense, and has no understanding. Proverbs repeats this idea over and over again. I was a fool. I was trapped in sin, and that sin caused me to lose my senses so that I couldn't see or understand how gross and wrong my actions were. The more I sinned, the more distorted my mind became and I was unable to understand that I was destroying my marriage and my family.

So what do you do if someone you love and care about has lost their senses? Timothy lays out a very simple plan of action on how to help someone who has lost their senses. He says,"And  the Lord's servant  must not be quarrelsome but  kind to everyone,  able to teach, patiently enduring evil,  correcting his opponents  with gentleness. God  may perhaps grant them repentance  leading to a knowledge of the truth, (2 Timothy 2:24, 25 ESV)"

1. Do not be Quarrelsome
     - Arguing with someone who has lost their senses is useless. Only God can give them understanding

2. Be Kind
     - It is against human nature to be kind to someone living in sin. God commands us to be kind and to love one another regardless of the sin in our lives.

3. Able to Teach
     - We must know the Word and be prepared to speak truth into the lives of others. It is only the truth of the Word of God that can lead someone to repentance.

4. Patiently Enduring Evil
     - This may be the most difficult step of all. What if when my wife confronted me I had not changed, but continued in my sin? The world would say,"Get a divorce and leave that pervert." But God says we ought to patiently endure evil. My wife endured my sin for 7 years before God finally granted me victory in my life. Where would I be if she had not patiently endured evil.

5. Correcting with Gentleness
     - It is hard to be gentle when you have been wronged. Ask God for grace to show gentleness to those living in sin.

As you live your life and you observe sin in people's lives and you wonder,"What we're they thinking?" Remember that sin is powerful and it causes people to lose their senses. They can't think clearly and they need the Truth of the Word of God to give them understanding and clarity of thought. For the past four months I have been living in victory over my sin of impurity and have renewed my relationship with Christ. It is such a blessing and extremely humbling to have the privilege to be married to a woman who is not quarrelsome, but is kind, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, and willing to gently correct me when I am wrong.

((I, Lindsay, am linking up on Multitudes on Mondays because there is nothing I am more thankful for than Christ's redeeming blood!))

Derek's 29th Birthday in iPhone pics.

You are the man God made for me.

I am so grateful for the 29 years of your life, and that I've gotten to spend the last 10 of them with you.

You wanted to work (another form of play for you) all morning. Then we ate some pizza while we drove up to Michigan to go cross country skiing.

Dinner at Olive Garden where you ate 5 bowls of Zuppa Tuscana and almost 3 baskets of breadsticks.

Then we went bowling where I kicked your butt. Thanks for the tips :)

This is Jeremy, not you :)

You complete me, and I adore you.

Happy Birthday, Love of my life.

30 Days of Thanksgiving {Day 1}

Every year I mean to do this and always forget until several days into November. Thanks to many friends doing this on facebook, I'm remembering this year just a couple hours before November 2nd! Thank you, thankful facebook friends! :)

I hope to write a short post every day for the next thirty days. It probably won't happen but that's okay! I'm no superwoman by any stretch of the imagination and I'm totally okay with that. Oh, and also there is no special order to each post. I'm just going to write about whatever comes to mind that I am thankful for.

Oh, and (again) also, it's okay if you don't care. This is mostly for me anyway :)

Tonight I am sitting across the kitchen table from the love of my life... the man of my dreams... my other half... my perfect puzzle piece.

Thank You, all-knowing Father, for my husband.

We've hit some sizable potholes on this road called marriage, and while most of them I would love to have never hit, I am so grateful for where they have brought us. We are quickly approaching our 7th anniversary, and I think it is safe to say we are happier than we've ever been. And it's crazy that we are still getting to know each other.

I love getting to know him.

At least once a week I find myself saying, "This is the life, isn't it?"

And of course, he always agrees with an "Mmmhmm."

Derek, I'm so grateful for...

Your love for me
Your love for the babies
Your work ethic
Your desire to know God
Your passion for ministry
Your patience, especially with me
Your drive to do your very best
Your commitment
Your willingness to help me
Being my best friend

"Like pieces of a puzzle molded for each other... I am your perfect fit and you are mine."

So glad I said yes.

9 years ago at the top of the Warren Dunes, Derek asked me to be his girlfriend.

I hesitated because I knew I was still struggling with a past relationship. But I also knew that I really wanted to be Derek's girlfriend. So I said yes.

I'm so glad I did.

For the first six months of our relationship I put that poor guy through the ringer. But he never once even considered breaking it off. He was in it for life starting on this day 9 years ago at the top of the Dunes.

About six months into our relationship I was working a gruelingly boring 8 hour shift in the dressing rooms at Marshalls.

I'll never forget that shift.

I was staring out at the store that was practically empty. I wasn't even really thinking about Derek. I was probably thinking about how insanely bored I was and wondering if it was worth the $6/hr or whatever it was.

But suddenly it hit me. I love him! I just knew it out of the blue. And was giddy about it. I watched him fight for me for the first six months. I watched him put up with me, adore me, treat me like a princess, have overwhelming patience for me.

I knew from that moment that I loved him and I haven't stopped since.

I'm so thankful God gave me a peace about saying yes 9 years ago, because I needed to see him fight for me. I have no doubt in my mind that he will always fight for me. He is so good to me.

It's important to mention that even though Derek has always been so amazing to me, if God hadn't gotten ahold of my ridiculousness six months after I said yes, I wouldn't have come to the place of recognizing it. God broke me just days before that shift at Marshalls and I'm so grateful for it!

Our whole relationship is completely owed to Him. It's such a beautiful thing when God writes your love story :)

Happy 9th Anniversary, my One and Only Forever Love.

Hugs and Kisses

Derek is home on break (hurray!!!) for a few weeks and we are thoroughly enjoying having him around! The kids are remarkably more happy when he's home. Even though I know he'd go stir crazy, I wish he could be home all the time!

Speaking of stir crazy, he just left for a long weekend trip with the school. So I'm a little nervous about how grouchy the babies are gonna be in the morning when they run into our room and daddy is not there. Jack has burst into tears in the past on such occasions.

It's very possible God brought along this pin to ensure that this weekend goes smoothly. (And also it's been a huge fear of mine since giving birth to Marie of losing or having a strained relationship with my kids).

Take the time to check out this blog post on Ahaparenting.com. Excellent ideas on how to strengthen your relationship with your babes! In the past, on not enough occasions, I've stopped in the midst of all I had to do while my kids were begging for attention and driving me crazy, and I gave them hugs and kisses and just played with them.

Can I just tell you, it works miracles! Even for just 5 minutes.

I am looking forward to some quality time with my babies this weekend, even if it means nothing really gets done. We're all gonna be missing daddy, so what better time to double up on hugs and kisses?

Please say a quick prayer for the group going on the trip this weekend. SAFETY, of course! And an overall wonderful time!

The Story of Us (Part 1)

Today we're celebrating 8 years since Derek asked me to be his girlfriend. In honor of one of the best days of my life, I'm reminiscing about our story...

It was the mid-1980's when boy met girl.

It was the late-1980's when boy left girl.

We were four. He doesn't remember those early years.

But I do.

Our backyards were neighbors.

I remember playing with Tonka trucks in his room.
I remember his blond bowl cut and dark tan.
I remember his runny nose.
I remember him chasing me around my house, trying to kiss me.
I remember bigwheels.
I remember the day his family up and moved (ultimately to PA).

That day was in 1989.

There was a time or two in the years following that his family visited the area.

I remember him and the neighbor, Joe, shooting "that girl" with play shot guns.
I remember running in my house to "freshen up." I was like... 6. What kinda 6yr old does that?
I remember when I came back out, he and Joe were gone. I didn't see him again until...

To be continued...

Kite Kraziness

Daddy Draft

Last Saturday our family went to the Kite Festival in Shipshewanna, IN. It was a brisk windy day, almost as if God had said, "Oh, a Kite Festival! Here ya go." and blew the winds over for us to enjoy our kites. All of the kids were able to build their own kite and then go fly them outside. Marie did a great job helping to build her kite, and I love the colors that she chose. I took video of the whole experience and kept emailing them to my family, all while carrying Jack on my back.

Just for the record, if you have never flown a kite before, you're missing out.

Here is the video of Marie flying the kite that she built. If you want to see more videos from that day you can view all my videos on YouTube by searching for my username: djacobs2311.

Truth vs. Experience

A Daddy Draft.

Biblical authority has been the foundation of my life and beliefs. It is Truth; it is trustworthy; it is the Word of God; it is alive. Sunday and Monday I was on a Spiritual Retreat where the majority of believers, and the man who was teaching, blended the Bible with their experiences. This made me very cautious and uncomfortable. How can we trust in our experiences? How can we know we are not being deceived? I heard grand stories of God’s healing power and His prophetic words and visions given to people. I heard stories of new revelation from God and miracles that I thought didn’t exist anymore. These stories have challenged me to step back and examine what I truly believe.

During our retreat I was indirectly referred to as arrogant, stubborn, and a Bible idolater. As I stand back and begin to process all that was shared at the retreat I am beginning to think that there may be some truth to these statements. I am willing to admit that I am still just a child spiritually and I have much to learn. I am still very reserved about listening to people talk about healings and prophecy and revelation from God; however, if the Word of God is truly ALIVE, shouldn’t we be able to experience it’s power in our lives? What does that look like? What does it feel like? While this retreat has been very challenging for me, one thing is certain, I am hungry for an opportunity to truly experience the Living Word of God in my life.

The Year 2010

At the beginning of 2010, Jack was a tiny little blob in a photo on Marie's shirt.

I was 12 weeks pregnant with him.

Now he's 6 months old and holds my heart in the palm of his tiny, squishy hand.

The world is a sweeter place with him here.

He's just about 20lbs, can sit up when he wants, is constantly grabbing at things, is always happy, and wants momma's milk only. And he's a snuggler. In a word: perfect.

At the beginning of 2010, Marie was 18 months old.

She was still very shy with strangers, but was not at all afraid of using her voice in many forms (babbling, screaming) around her parents.

Now she is 2.5 years old... what?!?!?

I refuse to believe it.

She's an athlete through and through. She loves to sing and dance and be in pictures. She adores her baby brother. She's finally putting together sentences. Every day she blows me away with her smarts! She's the most beautiful baby girl on the planet and I love her, love her, love her!

At the beginning of 2010, Derek was working at the Counseling Center and at Riverfront. He worked a lot. But he always found time for his girls.

He wasn't very happy. He felt like he was stuck... going nowhere fast.

Now Derek is working at The Crossing Educational Center, RETA, and running a Micro Soccer Academy. He works a lot. He still always finds time to spend time with his girls and little man.

But now he's happy. He led our family to Indiana by completely trusting God. He loves his jobs; he loves being in full time ministry; he loves knowing we are exactly where God wants us.

At the beginning of 2010, I was 3 months pregnant with my 2nd baby.
(This is at 18 weeks)
I was always exhausted and felt fat from day 1. But of course it resulted in another beautiful blessing so it was more than worth it.
I loved our "corner of 5th and Emmett" house; I loved my jobs as wife, mom, and jewelry designer; I loved spending time with my friends and the wonderful ladies at Oasis. I dreaded the move.

Now I am not pregnant, just fat.

I still adore my "jobs." I love living in Elkhart, but have learned through the whole experience that it really doesn't matter where we live, as long as we're together. I'm happiest when the 4 of us are all together.
I'm so proud of my amazing husband and my beautiful babies. I'm so thankful for our wonderful church. Life isn't easy entering 2011 but I wouldn't change a thing because I know we're where God wants us and doing what He wants us to do.

Happy New Year! Here's to 2011!

Home is where the heart is.

We've all heard the phrase, "Home is where the heart is," but I never thought much about it until God moved me to PA. And I've been reminded of it now that we've moved back to Indiana. My heart is where ever my husband and children are. But pieces of it are also with my extended family here in the midwest and out east. Other pieces are with my wonderful friends in PA. Still more with the amazing church we left behind in Scranton. I have many "homes" and I'm so grateful for that. Soon we will be placing pieces of our hearts in Russia. I think this is the way it's meant to be - to live and to love everwhere and anywhere that God has us. It makes it much harder to leave, but so much more beautiful while we're there... where ever "there" is.

So now we're here in Elkhart, and it's been quite the adventure! And I'm so pleased to admit that it's been a wonderful adventure! There have definitely been the downsides, like moving into a house that wasn't finished being renovated so all four of us were sleeping in one room. And when I had 102 degree fever for 3 days. And when Jack suddenly decided to be colicky after being a perfectly content baby. But, even amidst the down sides, there were so many ups. Like when my sister and mom helped with Marie while I was sick. And when my younger sibs came over to help us unpack and organize. And how I didn't have to cook for the first week because of the wonderful people at First Baptist. And how my littlest brother has a way with a colicky Jack! God never gives us more than we can handle!

We've been VERY busy since moving here, and I kinda like that! We got here just in time for the Elkhart County 4H fair. We went twice and had SO much fun! Marie loved it!

We've also gotten to attend 2 family birthday parties! We always had to miss them in the past. It's so nice to be a part of everything! I still feel like we're just visiting sometimes, though! It's bittersweet. I love that we don't have to leave, but it makes me sad thinking that we're not going back.

We got to check out some houses the other day! I've officially hired my sister-in-law to design for DandLs DangLs! And I've thoroughly enjoyed watching my baby girl interact with her extended family and being daily amazed by how much she's learning and growing!

Also, PRAISE THE LORD, Derek LOVES his job! More on that another time. I've rambled on enough. Time to get the girl down before the boy wakes up... and maybe catch a little nap myself!

Special THANK YOU to all our wonderful Scranton friends for helping us with food and with moving. We love you!

Casting Crowns

Derek and I won tickets to see Casting Crowns in State College, PA last week. It was amazing, of course! A great birthday present for me. We also enjoyed hearing Caleb and Tenth Avenue North. Loved all three. Both Tenth Ave. North and Casting Crowns played my favorites so I decided to share one.

Casting Crowns never fails to come out with songs that are incredibly convicting and often exactly what I need to hear. I will never forget when I first heard "Slow Fade." I had been praying about a situation that seemed to rear its ugly head over night. Right then, Slow Fade came on the radio. It was literally like God was responding to my prayer of confusion, not only opening my eyes to the truth of the situation, but convicting me personally to constantly be on guard.

Everybody needs to watch this video and listen to the lyrics. While there is a specific story told in this video, it applies to every area in life. Ask God if there is a chain in your life leading you toward something horrible, and make sure to break that chain now before it's too late.

A New Possibility

We are currently praying about a job opportunity for Derek in Indiana. He would be a tutor to kids who for one reason or another cannot go to a regular school. He is THRILLED about the prospect. For so many reasons it seems to be the absolutely perfect fit.

As I got more and more excited about the idea of the job and the positive report on the phone interview, I braced myself for a possible... no probable... down side. And it came almost like an afterthought. "They only have openings in Kokomo and Fort Wayne." For those who don't know much about the flat state of Indiana, this means that the closest location would be at least an hour and a half from where my family lives. I suddenly forgot all the reasons we want this job and nearly decided this would be a terrible idea.

This move that we are hoping to make is for the purpose of making a home base to come back to on furlough. We would like to own a house and have family close by so when we're home from the mission field, we don't have to live out of suitcases and we won't have to travel to see family. 2 hours is still traveling to me!

But I promised Derek that I would pray with an open heart, just in case God leads us somewhere I'm not thrilled about (or tells us to stay here). And seeing the light in Derek's eyes when he talks about this job... well God is working on me.

So right now I'm praying that God will provide an opening in either Elkhart, Goshen, or South Bend with the expectation that He will, but the realization that He might not.

Please pray with us while we go through this process. We're traveling to Indiana to check out the campus sometime in the next couple weeks. Hopefully we'll have some definite decisions made soon!
